The focus is on getting comfortable, building a connection, and starting to understand what's been happening and what you'd like to be different. There's no expectation to tell your whole story or have everything figured out. A more detailed intake assessment happens separately after the first session.

The intake assessment happens after the first therapy session and gives us an opportunity to look more closely at the bigger picture. We'll discuss relevant history, current concerns, patterns you've noticed, what's already been tried, strengths, and goals for therapy. This helps shape the direction of ongoing sessions so the work is intentional and tailored to what you or your son actually needs.

Do I need a referral?

No. You don't need a referral to book counselling. Parents and adult clients can contact me directly to schedule a free consultation. If you plan to use extended health benefits, it's worth checking your individual plan to confirm its requirements for coverage

How do I know if therapy is the right fit for my son?

If your son is struggling with focus, emotions, behaviour, relationships, or situations at school or home, it's worth exploring. You don't need to wait until things reach a breaking point. The free consultation is also a chance to talk through what's happening and determine whether my approach is a good fit for what he needs.

What if my son doesn't want to come?

That's common. Most boys aren't lining up to see a therapist. The first session is intentionally low-pressure and doesn't feel like traditional therapy. There's no couch, no awkward silences, and no pressure to open up right away. We start by building a connection and meeting him where he is. Most boys are surprised by how different it actually is.
